Backwards Party Ideas and Games

Backwards Party Ideas for Invitations

  • Write your invitations backwards, such as “Party Backwards To Invited You’re”
  • Make your invitations a mirror image, so guests will need to hold it up to a mirror to read it
  • Backwards Party Decorations

  • Hang balloons from the ceiling by their string
  • Hang a Happy Birthday Banner upside down
  • Hang pictures upside down
  • Place gifts under the gift table instead of on top of it
  • What backwards party ideas are complete without a backwards clock?

Favorite Party Games and Backwards Activities:

As guests arrive, wish them “goodbye”

As guests leave, tell them “hello”

Have a name tag prepared for each guest…with their name spelled backwards. Call them this name throughout the party.

Ask guests what they want to be when they are a baby (rather than what they want to be when they grow up)

Serve cake at the beginning of the party, instead of at the end

Tell guests to wear their clothes to the party backwards, or inside out

Play Don’t Follow the Leader – do the opposite of what the leader does

Play Reverse Freeze Dance - when the music stops…dance. When the music plays…freeze!

Play Backwards Bean Bag Toss - Toss a bean bag behind you, over your shoulder

    Have a somersault contest

Play soccer, but you can only kick balls with the heel of your feet

Have a relay race where you do crazy things, like kicking a ball and running while wearing a flipper!

If this is a Backwards Slumber Party

  • Serve a Wacky Meal! Cover your table with a disposable table cloth and serve speghetti on the table. Literally! Dump spaghetti and sauce in the middle of the table and have everyone just grab some, put in front of them and eat. No plates! Messy, but fun and perfect for when you are doing things backwards!
  • Or, serve breakfast for dinner
  • Make sure you turn your sleeping bags inside out!
  • Mismatched Party

    The Mismatched Party:

I was recently part of a retreat for kids and one of the activities was a Mismatched Party. This is a fun similar idea to the backwards party ideas.

Kids were told to wear mismatched clothes. Everyone really got into it! If they forgot to bring something wacky, kids would just put their clothes on backwards, wear different shoes on each foot, and create a crazy hairstyle.

It was a lot of fun!

    Birthday Cake Ideas:

  • An upside down cake
  • A cake with the writing backwards
  • Make ice cream sundaes, but put the toppings on the bottom

    Party Favor Ideas

  • Anything personalized with the guest’s name written backwards
