Decade Timeline







My collection of some of the most important events for this twentieth century decade timeline is in no way complete, but may help you come up with some ideas when trying to capture a feeling for a theme party or decorate with a certain decade in mind.

A Decade Timeline of the Twentieth Century




1900’s
1900 - First affordable, portable camera introduced
1901 – President McKinley was assasinated and Teddy Roosevelt became President. Also, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum introduced.
1903 – Orville and Wilbur Wright took their plane for a flight in Kittyhawk, NC and the first World Series is held (Boston defeating Pittsburgh)
1904 – New York Subway opened
1906 – The Great San Francisco Earthquake
1908 – Henry Ford made his first Model T
1909 – “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” was first sung

1910’s
1910 – Boy Scouts of America founded
1912 – The Titanic sank
1913 – Ford Motor Company introduced moving assembly line
1914 – World War I began
1917 – The U.S. entered World War I
1919 – First airline link established between London and Paris

1920’s
1920 - First radio broadcast, prohibition begins, and women get the right to vote
1921 – First Miss America is crowned
1923 – King Tut’s tomb is opened
1927 - First talking movie “The Jazz Singer”, Pilot Charles Lindbergh lands in Paris, and Babe Ruth set a home run record
1928 - First Mickey Mouse talking film, “Steamboat Willie”, released by Walt Disney
1929 - Stock Market Crash

1930’s
1931 –The "Star Spangled Banner" became our national anthem, and the world’s tallest building, the Empire State Building, opened in New York City
1934 - Shirley Temple was a star, and Bonnie and Clyde were killed
1937 – The Hindenburg air ship burned and Amelia Earhart disappeared
1938 - Broadcast of the “War of the Worlds”
1939 – The films “The Wizard of Oz” and “Gone with the Wind” were released

1940’s
1941 – Pearl Harbor bombed and the U.S. enters WWII
1944 – Dday
1945 – US bombed Japan
1946 – The bikini was introduced
1948 – The Frisbee was invented

1950’s
1950 – Korean War Begins
1952 - Polio Vaccine Created and Elizabeth crowned Queen of England
1954 – Matchbox cars invented
1955 – Disneland opened, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus, and James Dean died
1956 – Elvis appeared on the Ed Sullivan show
1957 – Hula Hoops invented
1959 – Barbie invented

1960’s
1961 – Soviets launched first man into space
1962 – Marilyn Monroe found dead
1963 - JFK Assassinated in Dallas, and Martin Luther King Jr. made his "I Have a Dream" Speech
1964 – The Beatles “invaded” the U.S.
1965 – U.S. sent troops to Vietnam
1967 – First Superbowl
1968 - Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy Assassinated
1969 - Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon, Woodstock, and “Sesame Street” debut

1970’s
1970 - Beatles broke up
1972 – Watergate began
1973 - U.S. left of Vietnam
1974 – Patty Hearst kidnapped
1976 - Nadia Comaneci scored seven perfect tens at the Olympics, The U.S. celebrated it’s bicentennial
1977 – Elvis died and “Star Wars” was released
1979 - Ayatollah Khomeini Returns as Leader of Iran, Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister, Three Mile Island, Sony introduced the Walkman

1980's
1980 - John Lennon Assassinated
1981 - Assassination attempted on the Pope and on President Ronald Reagan, and Charles and Diana married
1982 - E.T. Movie Released, Falkland Islands War, Michael Jackson Releases Thriller
1985 – Hole in the ozone discovered
1989 - Berlin Wall fell, Exxon Valdez, massacre in China's Tiananmen Square

1990's
1990 - The Gulf War, Nelson Mendela released from prison
1993 - The Branch Davidians in Waco
1994 - OJ's car chase
1997 – Hong Kong returned to China, Princess Diana died in car crash and Dolly the sheep was cloned
1999 – Everyone prepared for Y2K, JFK Jr. died in plane crash

2000 - ...Well, I guess that will need to appear on a new decade timeline for the Millenium! Coming soon...
